Vermilion Parish takes its weather straight off the coast. Before Hurricane Rita in 2005, the parish told everyone south of Highway 14 to leave. The surge that followed pushed salt water across hundreds of square miles of marsh and farm ground. Cattle drowned, and salt ruined rice and cane fields that had been in families for generations.
In 2020 it happened twice. Hurricane Laura came in late August, and Hurricane Delta landed near Creole about six weeks later. Delta was the smaller storm, but it stripped tarps back off roofs people had just patched. It also picked up the debris piles left by Laura and scattered them again.

Abbeville has old housing stock. Census figures show about seven in ten homes were built before 1980. Close to 700 units date to 1939 or earlier, many of them near Magdalen Square downtown. After enough water sits in a house like that, it is often past saving.

Abbeville requires a culvert permit before you cover any ditch. The application comes from the city Permit Department on North State Street. Outside the city limits, culvert questions go to Vermilion Parish Public Works. A driveway that ties into a state highway like Highway 14 or US 167 may need a state permit too.

Past the city limits, Vermilion Parish is farm ground. Rice, sugarcane, beef cattle and crawfish are the main products here. A lot of those fields flood for crawfish from about February into June, then dry back down. Pond work and field drainage follow that calendar, so we plan around it.
