Pond digging in Acadiana comes down to two things: clay and flat ground. We dig farm ponds, fishing ponds and crawfish ponds for landowners around New Iberia. Most soil in south Louisiana carries enough clay to hold water. That clay is why a dug pond works here.

Soil is the first thing we check on a new pond. LSU AgCenter guidance puts the clay a pond needs to seal at roughly 20 to 25 percent. Most south Louisiana soil is at or above that. The catch is sand lenses, buried pockets of sand that get dug out and capped with clay.
Acadiana ground is flat, so ponds here get dug out rather than dammed between hills. Spoil from the hole becomes a levee, a house pad or fill for dirt work and land leveling elsewhere. Old roots and stumps come out of the pond floor before we finish. Pond bottoms need to sit above the water in nearby ditches, or the pond will not drain.
For a fishing pond, LSU AgCenter puts the useful range around 4 to 6 feet. It calls for an average depth of at least 4 feet, with no part shallower than 3 feet. Water past about 6 or 7 feet does little for fish here. Sides should slope no steeper than 3 to 1, so anything that falls in can get out.
A crawfish pond is the opposite build. Those fields run shallow, usually 8 to 16 inches of water behind low levees. Acadiana is crawfish country, and many of these ponds are rice fields worked in rotation. Our part is the dirt: levees built and rebuilt, bottoms leveled flat. LSU AgCenter guidance says levee work should come before broodstock go in the pond. We do this work around New Iberia and out in the rice parishes, including pond work in Crowley.
Pond dredging is the other half of the work. Ponds silt in over the years, and the edges go shallow and grow up in brush. We cut those edges back below the waterline and put the spoil on the levee. Heavy bank growth usually needs land clearing along the pond banks before the excavator can reach.
