What does a driveway culvert cost in Acadiana, and who permits it?

What does a driveway culvert cost?
Published figures spread wide because the jobs spread wide. HomeGuide lists culverts and drains at $500 to $2,000 as a line item on a driveway build. Angi puts a professional culvert replacement at $1,000 to $9,000 with an average of about $4,500. A contractor cost guide puts a simple install near $1,500 and a complex one at $5,000 and up.

The pipe is the smaller number. What decides the rest is the length, the depth of the ditch, whether an old pipe has to come out first, how much rock the approach needs, and whether the ends get a headwall. Rock headwalls at the ends keep the ditch bank from sloughing into the pipe and give the crossing a finished look.
What pipe goes under a driveway in south Louisiana?
Three materials show up at Acadiana yards: corrugated plastic (HDPE and polypropylene), corrugated galvanized metal, and reinforced concrete. The limestone yard on Marina Road in New Iberia stocks all three.
Plastic is the common pick for a residential drive. It does not rust, it is light to set, and it lasts for decades in wet ground. Metal can cost less in the bigger diameters and carries heavy loads, but it corrodes from the inside out in wet or acidic soil, and the rusted-through pipes that get replaced are almost always old metal. Concrete is for heavy or permanent crossings, and Lafayette requires it for cross drains under public roads.
Size is not your call. The parish or city looks at the ditch and sets or approves the diameter, because a pipe that is too small backs water up on the neighbors. Lafayette’s public infrastructure standards set 15 inches as the minimum culvert size and cap an open-ditch driveway at 32 feet unless safety calls for more. Fifteen, 18 and 24 inch pipe covers most residential drives. When in doubt, go one size up. The material cost difference is small and replacing an undersized pipe means digging up the driveway.
Who permits a driveway culvert in Iberia and the nearby parishes?
The ditch is public property, so the owner of the ditch issues the permit. Louisiana law (R.S. 33:4884) lets a parish or city regulate culvert installation in its drains and even require that the work be contracted through the parish at the owner’s cost. Each Acadiana parish runs it a little differently.

Other towns and parishes route it their own way. St. Martin, Vermilion, St. Landry and St. Mary each have a permit office, and the first call is to them. If your drive ties into LA 14, LA 31, LA 182, US 90 or another state route, the permit comes from Louisiana DOTD instead, and its form asks for the culvert diameter, length and material.
Some parishes size the pipe and set it themselves once you buy it. Others let a contractor do the work under the permit and inspect it after. Ask which way your parish works when you call. Either way, Louisiana 811 needs at least two business days of notice before the trench opens, because water, gas and fiber lines run along those same ditches.
Who takes care of the culvert after it is in?
In most parishes, you do. Road crews clean roadside ditches to grade, but the pipe under a private driveway is the owner’s to keep open and replace when it fails. One parish puts it in writing that its crews do not return to maintain or dress up a culvert after installation, and that pattern holds across the region. Rules differ, so confirm it when you pull the permit.
Keeping a culvert alive is simple. Keep the ends clear of leaves and silt. Watch for water standing upstream after a rain, which means the pipe is choked or set too high. Replace metal pipe when the bottom rusts through, before the driveway above it starts to sink.
What does a culvert job look like from start to finish?
The permit comes first. Then the old pipe comes out if there is one, the ditch bottom gets cut to grade, and bedding goes in so the new pipe sits at the right fall. The pipe is set, backfilled in lifts, and the driveway approach is built back up with limestone. Rock headwalls at each end finish it.
