Carencro sits about 30 miles north of New Iberia, up I-49 on the far side of Lafayette. We run excavation and demolition work here most weeks. Carencro has been the fastest growing city in Louisiana for five years running. New rooftops stand where cane fields and pasture used to be. City leaders have talked about roughly 1,500 house lots in active development at a time. That growth changes what a property owner has to deal with. A lot that sat quiet for decades now needs a pad and a driveway. We handle that work with mini excavators, a compact track loader and dump trailers.

Every one of those houses starts with dirt.
We build house pads, level lots and cut grade so water runs off the slab. Heavy clay takes more fill than most owners expect. Compaction matters as much as the fill itself. When you need dirt work and house pads in Carencro, the pad decides how the rest of the build goes.
Carencro's Planning Division uses a freeboard elevation form before the slab goes in. It sets a lowest required floor elevation, usually a foot above base flood elevation or the street centerline. A surveyor, engineer or architect certifies the numbers and sets a construction benchmark. We build the pad to hit that mark, then shoot it again before the forms go up.
It depends on which side of the city line your property sits on. Inside the city limits, the City of Carencro handles building, driveway and mobile home permits through its Planning Division. Outside those limits, Lafayette Consolidated Government covers the unincorporated parish. We deal with both offices, and with the same split on excavation work in Lafayette just south of here.
A Carencro mailing address does not always put you inside the city. ZIP 70520 covers several times the ground the city itself does. Plenty of homes on the country roads around town carry a Carencro address and fall under parish rules. Call the city first and ask which office covers your address.
Lafayette Consolidated Government issues building, mobile home, floodplain development and land disturbance permits. Construction work can also fall under LDEQ stormwater rules. Larger clearing and grading jobs are usually where that comes up. We line the paperwork up with the schedule so the machine can start on time.
The country lots are part of why people move out here. Coteau Ridge is a gated subdivision with lots over 1.3 acres and two ponds. Lots that size need a driveway built on a stone base. We cut the base, lay stone and crown it so water sheds off both sides.
Almost every rural drive in Lafayette Parish crosses a roadside ditch. A gravel driveway install in Carencro means a culvert, and the pipe has to match what the ditch carries. The city's permit form asks for driveway width, culvert length and the distance from the property corner. It also asks whether the corners and the pipe are staked before work starts.
The city's form lists a $200 fee for a driveway permit. Confirm the current amount when you apply. A city inspector verifies the pipe the same day it goes in, which puts the whole install on one clock. We set the pipe, backfill it and finish the drive on the same trip.
The land coming into development here was cane, pasture or woods. Some of it has sat untouched for decades. Brush, briars and volunteer trees take a lot over fast in this climate. We clear lots and underbrush tracts with an excavator and a track loader, then haul the material off.
