Elite Excavation Services takes excavation and demolition work in Crowley, about 45 miles northwest of our base in New Iberia. Crowley sits in the middle of Acadia Parish rice country, and the ground under most lots shows it. The soil is silt loam on top with silty clay below, and water moves through it slowly. A tight clay layer starts around fourteen inches down, so rain tends to sit right where it lands.
A flooded rice field needs that, and a house pad needs the opposite. Most of what we get called for in Crowley is residential work on ordinary lots. An empty house off Parkerson Avenue, a mobile home coming off a rented lot, a slab driveway breaking apart. Add stumps left after a storm, and gravel lanes that have turned to ruts after a wet winter.

The Crowley Historic District covers about 210 acres and roughly 266 buildings put up between 1887 and 1931. Queen Anne and Craftsman houses line those streets, and smaller wood frame homes sit on narrow lots around them. Plenty of that housing stock is close to a hundred years old now. When one of those houses is past saving, taking it down is close quarters work.
We use mini excavators for this kind of teardown. That matters when the next house is across a narrow side yard and an oak hangs over the fence. We pull the structure down in sections, load it out, and clear the piers and slab underneath. Permits depend on which side of the city line your property sits on. Inside Crowley, the city issues building and demolition permits from its office on North Parkerson Avenue. The USDA soil series named for this town runs under much of Acadia Parish. It is somewhat poorly drained with very slow permeability, and slopes here run under one percent. Flat ground plus slow soil means rain has nowhere to go on its own.
A house pad in Crowley gets built up above the surrounding grade. We haul in fill, compact it in lifts, and crown the pad so water sheds off. Then we grade the yard so runoff moves toward a ditch or a culvert. Standing water against a slab is the problem we are trying to prevent.
Lot grading after a teardown works the same way. The old footprint gets filled, packed, and shaped so the lot drains instead of ponding. If you are planning a build, dirt work and house pads should be finished before anyone pours.
Gravel drives take a beating around Crowley. Many of them run long, off LA 13, US 90, or a parish road back to a house. Under the rock sits the same slow clay that holds water. When the base stays wet, the stone works down into the mud and the drive ruts out.
The fix is a real base under the rock. We strip the soft material, lay stone, compact it, and crown the surface. Water then runs off the middle instead of pooling in a wheel track. Side ditches get cut or cleaned at the same time, and gravel driveway repair usually starts there.
Most Crowley drives cross a ditch, so the culvert under the apron decides how long the rock lasts. A crushed or undersized pipe backs water up under the drive. We set the culvert, backfill it, then rebuild the apron over the top. Ask the parish road department about culvert rules, and LA DOTD about tying into a state highway.
Bayou Plaquemine Brule runs at Crowley and joins Bayou des Cannes in Acadia Parish to form the Mermentau River. When those channels come up, this town feels it. In August 2016 the Mermentau went over its banks and put roughly a third of Crowley under water. I-10 closed for a long stretch that week, so ditch and culvert capacity is not a small detail here.
We dig farm and recreational ponds on property around Crowley. On ground that already grows rice, crawfish pond work is the more common ask. That means shaping the levee, setting the drain pipe, and placing the spoil where you want it. A spoil pile left in the middle of a field creates a new problem.
