Concrete Removal in New Iberia, LA

Concrete Removal · New Iberia, LA

Cracked driveways and old slabs broken out and hauled off

Concrete removal in New Iberia usually starts with a call to tear out a cracked, sunken driveway or patio. We handle concrete driveway removal and concrete slab removal, plus walkways, sidewalks, steps and shop floors. The excavator breaks the concrete into pieces and lifts them out, and every piece leaves with us. Estimates are free and done on site, so call (337) 201-0594 to set one up.

Old footings and foundations come out too, once the building above them is gone. If a house or mobile home still stands, the slab goes with house and mobile home demolition. We do concrete demolition with mini excavators and a compact track loader. We work out of New Iberia and cover the rest of Acadiana.

How concrete driveway and patio removal works

Every job starts with a free look at the concrete. Thickness matters, and so does any rebar or wire mesh inside it. We also check how the machines get in, since fences, gates and soft ground all change the plan. You get a price before anything breaks.

The excavator breaks the slab into pieces and lifts them free. Rebar and wire mesh come out with the pieces. The compact track loader carries the broken concrete across the yard and loads it. It leaves in roll-off containers or our dump trailers as the work goes.

Driveways, patios, walkways, sidewalks and steps all come out this way. So do slabs left from old sheds, carports and mobile homes, and shop floors whose buildings are already gone. If the shed still stands, that is shed and garage demolition, and the slab can go too.

Why does concrete crack and sink around New Iberia?

Most of the ground here is heavy clay. The USDA's Iberia soil series, described about 5 miles east of New Iberia, cracks open as it dries. In normal years the cracks reach up to 1 inch wide and 20 inches deep or more. A slab sitting on ground like that loses support in spots, and the edges crack and drop.

Rain works on it from the other side. The same USDA description puts rainfall near New Iberia at about 60 inches a year, spread through every season. The clay drains very slowly, so water that slips under a slab through a crack tends to stay. The base softens, and the concrete settles into it.

Tree roots can lift a walkway or split a driveway as they grow. Water that stands beside a slab after every storm points to a drainage problem. New concrete in the same spot meets the same water. That fix is yard drainage and French drains, and it comes before anything new goes down.

What goes in after the slab comes out

Once the concrete is gone, you have bare ground and a choice to make. An old concrete drive can be replaced with a new gravel driveway on the same path. Some people want a parking pad instead, and some want the spot turned back into yard.

Either way, the ground usually needs shaping first. Low spots get filled, and the dirt is spread with the track loader and packed. A raised pad for a new build is house pad work, and a lot that needs leveling is lot leveling and grading. A yard going back to grass is left smooth and ready for seed or sod.

A new slab is a job for a concrete contractor. We can leave the ground cleared and graded to the height your builder or concrete contractor sets. That way the next contractor starts on clean, level ground.

Permits, 811 and where the broken concrete goes

Louisiana's dig law covers both excavation and demolition, and moving material in or on the ground counts as excavation. Notice to Louisiana 811 goes in at least 48 hours ahead, and no more than 120 hours ahead. Weekends and holidays do not count toward those hours. We put the notice in and wait for the utility marks before the first slab breaks.

Iberia Parish has a permit rule for driveway approaches on the parish right-of-way. An approach there cannot be moved or changed in size without another permit from the Permit Office. Inside New Iberia and in other parishes, another office may cover the street end of a driveway. We check which office covers your address before we touch concrete at the road.

Broken concrete is heavy, so it loads directly into roll-off containers or dump trailers. It is hauled to an approved disposal site, and the ground is left clear. A loose pile of old broken concrete is a separate job: debris removal for old piles.

FAQ

Concrete Removal Questions, Answered

Common questions about concrete removal across New Iberia and all of Acadiana. If yours is not here, call and ask.

Call (337) 201-0594

How much does concrete removal cost?
LawnStarter puts concrete removal at $2 to $7 per square foot nationally. It adds that slabs thicker than 6 inches often cost double. Around Acadiana, rebar and the haul to a disposal site move the number too. Our concrete removal cost guide breaks those ranges down by job, and the house demolition cost guide lists slab and driveway removal lines as well. A real number needs an on-site look, and that look is free.
Do I need a permit to remove a concrete driveway?
It depends on where the concrete sits. In Iberia Parish, the permit rules cover driveway approaches on the parish right-of-way. An approach there cannot be moved or changed in size without another permit. Other towns and parishes set their own rules, so we check yours first. Louisiana 811 also gets notice at least 48 hours ahead, weekends and holidays not counted.
Can you take out a slab with rebar in it?
Yes. The excavator breaks the slab into pieces, and the rebar or wire mesh comes out with them. Steel inside a slab means more work, and LawnStarter notes that reinforced concrete takes more labor to remove. We look for rebar during the free estimate, so it is part of the price before work starts. The steel leaves on the same loads as the concrete.
How long does concrete removal take?
It depends on how much concrete there is and how thick it is. LawnStarter says small removal jobs can be done in a day, while a foundation can take several days. Wet weather matters here, because soaked clay is soft and slows the machines down. The 811 notice sets the earliest start, since it has to go in before any breaking begins.
How far do you travel for concrete removal?
We work out of New Iberia and cover Acadiana. That means Iberia, Lafayette, St. Martin, Vermilion, St. Landry, Acadia and St. Mary parishes. Towns like Broussard, Youngsville, Abbeville and Morgan City are all in range. Our page on excavation and demolition in Broussard shows what we do there. Estimates are free anywhere in that area.
