Stump removal in New Iberia means digging the stump out of the ground, roots and all. We use a mini excavator to open the dirt around the stump and lift the whole root ball out. The hole gets backfilled and packed down. The stump and the wood leave on our trailer.

Every dig starts with utility locates. Louisiana law says the dig ticket goes in at least 48 hours ahead, not counting weekends and holidays. Once the lines are marked, we open the dirt around the stump and cut the big roots loose. The machine then lifts the root ball out in one piece.
The hole gets filled back with the same dirt we dug out. We knock the loose soil off the root ball first, so most of it stays on site. Dirt that has been dug up settles, so we mound the fill a little over grade. If the spot will carry a pad or a driveway, that turns into dirt work.
Cut a tallow tree off at ground level and it comes right back. Chinese tallow, the popcorn tree, grows in yards and ditches all over south Louisiana. It resprouts from cut stumps and sends shoots up off the roots. Live oaks sprout too, both off the stump and off the roots.
Digging takes out the stump and the root crown. Fine roots can stay behind in the dirt, and a stray shoot can still show up. Pulling the root ball gets you much closer to a clean spot than cutting does. On a lot full of tallow stumps, we handle them as part of land clearing.
Acadiana sits on heavy clay with a high water table. Dig a stump hole after a wet week and it can hold water before you finish. We run compact track machines, which spread their weight better than wheels on soft ground. On some yards the smart move is to wait a few dry days rather than tear up the grass.
Back yards are the tight ones, and we size the machine to the opening we have. Stumps left after a house comes down get pulled while the machine is on site for demolition work.
