Elite Excavation Services handles excavation and demolition in Youngsville, about 12 miles northwest of New Iberia. That is a short run for us, so getting out to look at a job here is easy. This is one of the fastest growing cities in Louisiana, and that growth shows up in the dirt work. The 2020 census counted 15,929 people living here, up from fewer than 4,000 back in 2000.
Most of those new houses went up on ground that used to grow sugarcane for generations. Cane land was shaped to drain a field, and a house slab needs something firmer under it. Under that sits heavy clay with a high water table, so rain sheets off instead of soaking in. That is why so many Youngsville lots need dirt moved and water routed before a foundation goes down.
The work we get called out for in Youngsville follows that same pattern most of the year. A builder needs a house pad built up, packed and shot to grade before the concrete crew shows. An owner has a low back corner that holds water for days after a good rain. Out past the subdivisions, someone wants a gravel drive built or a barn pulled down and hauled off.

Youngsville sits flat on old cane ground, and sugarcane farms still ring the city. A field like that was cut to shed water in rows, so it drains slow once the rows are gone. Before a slab goes down, the pad has to be built up over the surrounding grade.
We strip the topsoil off the pad footprint first. Topsoil is soft and full of root matter, so it will not hold a slab. Then we haul in fill, spread it in lifts and compact each one. The finished pad gets shaped square to the plan and crowned so water runs off it.
Your builder or engineer sets the finished pad height. Youngsville reviews the site plan and the foundation drawings before it issues a building permit. We build to the elevation on the approved set. Leveling the rest of the lot falls under dirt work and house pad prep.
Acadiana sits on heavy clay with the water table close to the surface. Rain runs off instead of soaking in. Youngsville is close to flat, sitting around 26 feet of elevation. Roadside ditches and coulees carry most of that water toward the Vermilion River.
August 2016 showed what happens when the rain beats the ditches. Hundreds of Youngsville homes took water that weekend, and Highland Ridge was hit hard. The city and the parish have built regional detention ponds since then. One of them ties Highland Ridge to Coulee LaSalle.
New developments here now have to hold storm water on site, and that gets engineered at the subdivision level. Our work is on the lot itself. We cut swales to pull water off a low corner and open filled-in ditches back up. Setting a pipe under the drive is driveway culvert installation.
Past the newer subdivisions, Youngsville turns rural fast. Verot School Road, Chemin Metairie and the Milton area still run out to cane fields and small acreage. Out there we clear overgrown lots and dig farm and crawfish ponds. A gravel drive on that ground usually has to cross a ditch first.
We set the culvert in the ditch and backfill it so the ditch keeps flowing. Then we cut the soft clay out of the drive line and bring in base rock. The base gets compacted and crowned down the middle. Top rock goes on last so the surface sheds water instead of holding it.
Work in the public right of way needs a City of Youngsville permit. On a state highway like LA 92 or LA 339, the permit comes through LA DOTD. We build once the permit is in hand, and fresh builds or worn drives both fall under gravel driveway installs.
Youngsville has two kinds of housing stock. The old core around Iberia Street goes back to when the town was called Royville. Around it sit thousands of homes built in the last twenty years. Both ends of that produce demolition work.
We take out houses, mobile homes, garages, barns and carports. Concrete slabs and old driveways get broken out and hauled off. Small commercial buildings are in range as well. Debris leaves in roll-off containers and the site gets graded back flat.
Louisiana requires notice to LDEQ before some demolitions, mostly commercial and multi-unit buildings. We coordinate around those rules and do not perform abatement.
