Elite Excavation Services handles excavation and demolition in Patterson, about 37 miles southeast of New Iberia. The drive is down US 90 to this St. Mary Parish town on Bayou Teche and the Lower Atchafalaya River. We tear down Patterson's older houses and mobile homes, then do the dirt work the cleared lot needs. Call (337) 201-0594 for a free on-site estimate.
Patterson began as Dutch Settlement and took its name from Captain John Patterson, a trader who settled there in 1832. It was incorporated in 1907, and Census estimates now count about 5,700 people and 2,511 homes. The median home was built in 1980, and about one in seven is a mobile home. The town lies inside the Wax Lake East Drainage District, where a levee system surrounds the district's towns.

About half of Patterson's 2,511 homes went up before 1980, by Census estimates. The 1970s alone account for 604 of them. Another 443 went up in the 1940s and 1950s, and 80 date to 1939 or earlier. When one is past saving, our house demolition in Patterson takes it down and leaves a clean, level lot.
Census estimates count 380 mobile homes in town. Our mobile home demolition clears an old unit off the lot so the next one can go in. That new home needs a city permit with a copy of the title, a plot plan and the mover's information. The city leaves it to you to check that the home fits the lot, setbacks and easements included.
Demolition is on the city's permit list as well, so inside city limits the paperwork comes first. The applications are on the Building Department's Get a Permit page. The utility company, a plumber or an electrician disconnects service before our machines show up. We put in the Louisiana 811 notice at least 48 hours ahead, not counting weekends and holidays.
The city's drainage study by Providence Engineering and Design calls Highway 90 the main drainage path in Patterson. Red Cypress Road, Hickory Street and Taft Street carry water from the northern half of town down to the highway. The high point is the crown of Main Street, beside Bayou Teche. From there, runoff travels about 8,000 feet of roadside drainage to the outfall across from Red Cypress Road.
The study traced flooding to high water in roadside ditches, caused by undersized and silted-in culverts and undersized ditches. Side-street ditches in town run 2 to 3 feet deep and 10 to 15 feet wide at the top. The fixes it recommended were larger, smoother culverts at better grades, plus cleaned and enlarged ditches. Taft Street's drainage checked out as working, so the fixes landed on Highway 90, Red Cypress Road and Hickory Street.
The study modeled a 25-year storm in St. Mary Parish as 9.6 inches of rain in 24 hours. Culverts are on Patterson's permit list too, so a new driveway culvert inside city limits starts with a permit. We handle driveway culvert installation and set the pipe to the grade of the ditch it serves. When a yard holds water, our ditch and yard drainage work gives it a path to the street ditch.
The soil table in the city's drainage study puts about 87 percent of Patterson's watershed in three soils. Baldwin silty clay loam covers about 41 percent, Iberia clay about 26 percent and Schriever clay about 20 percent. USDA describes Baldwin soil as poorly drained and very slowly permeable. It lies largely on natural levees along Bayou Teche and similar old river channels.
Clay like this changes with the weather. Dry Baldwin soil cracks 20 inches deep or more, and the cracks can stay open 10 to 30 days. Iberia clay holds a saturated layer within 2 feet of the surface from December through April in normal years. USDA also notes that unprotected areas of Iberia clay flood commonly.
On this ground, a new home sits best on a raised house pad packed in lifts. Before the pad goes in, check the flood map and the 2023 zoning map the Building Department posts online. About half of Patterson's 1,125-acre watershed is quarter-acre house lots. On a lot that size, our dirt work pitches the yard so rain runs to the street ditch.
Beyond the house lots, the rest of Patterson's watershed is undeveloped woods and lots, plus the highway itself. When a lot in town grows up in brush, our lot clearing opens it back up. We clear brush and small trees, then dig the stumps out whole and backfill the holes. Cleared ground on Baldwin soil drains slowly, so we grade it to drain toward the street ditch.
A shed or garage on the lot can come down with the house through our shed and garage teardowns. Portable sheds are on Patterson's permit list too, so ask City Hall first. Debris leaves in roll-off containers and dump trailers for an approved disposal site. A leftover slab or driveway can be broken out and hauled off with it.
Patterson Canal, across Highway 90 from Red Cypress Road, is the main drainage outlet for the whole city. South of the highway, Kelli, David, Mike and Leo Drives drain to Luccia Canal instead. Both routes end in the borrow canal south of town. The Possum Bayou and Cotten Road pump stations empty it into the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway.
